Jakub Dobes Solidifies Role as Canadiens' Top Goaltender with Stellar Performances
The Montreal Canadiens' locker room was buzzing with praise for rookie goaltender Jakub Dobes following another standout performance that has cemented his position as the team's undisputed number one netminder. After a crucial victory against the Carolina Hurricanes, teammates and coaches alike pointed to Dobes' exceptional play as the foundation for their recent success.
Dramatic Improvement Under New Coaching
Since goalie coach Marco Marciano replaced Eric Raymond on January 28, Dobes' statistics have shown remarkable improvement. The 24-year-old Czech goaltender has posted a 7-3-1 record with a 2.72 goals-against average and a .907 save percentage under Marciano's guidance. This represents significant progress from his earlier season numbers of a 3.12 GAA and .884 save percentage.
"He played great last night and gave us a chance early in the game," said forward Alex Newhook after Wednesday's optional practice. "For him to keep us in the game, sometimes you need your goalies to do that, especially at this time of the year. He showed up for us when we needed him."
Standout Performance Against Carolina
Dobes delivered arguably his best performance of the season in Tuesday's 5-2 victory over the Eastern Conference-leading Hurricanes. After allowing two early goals in the first seven minutes while facing 10 shots, Dobes settled in and stopped the next 33 shots he faced, finishing with 41 saves and a .953 save percentage.
The rookie netminder made several crucial stops that preserved Montreal's lead, including breakaway saves against Taylor Hall in the first period and Logan Stankoven in the third period that would have narrowed the score to 4-3. His performance helped secure Montreal's second consecutive win and third victory in four games, strengthening the team's hold on third place in the Atlantic Division.
Establishing Himself as the Starter
In 35 games this season with 34 starts, Dobes has compiled an impressive 23-8-4 record with a 2.88 goals-against average. While his overall save percentage sits at .896, his ability to win games has made him invaluable to the Canadiens' playoff push. Head coach Martin St. Louis appears committed to riding the hot hand, with Dobes expected to start Thursday against Columbus as Montreal concludes a three-game homestand.
"He was great," veteran defenseman Mike Matheson said of Dobes' performance. "He made a lot of really big saves in key important times in the game. I think the goalies are playing great. They have a lot of confidence. And we have a lot of confidence in them."
Playoff Implications and Rookie Tandem
With 12 games remaining in the regular season and a five-game road trip beginning Saturday in Nashville, the Canadiens appear poised to rely on their rookie goaltending tandem of Dobes and Jacob Fowler for a potential playoff run. Fowler, recently recalled from AHL Laval, has two wins and a loss and will likely play in one of the back-to-back games this weekend when Montreal travels to Carolina on Sunday.
Veteran goaltender Samuel Montembeault hasn't played since March 6 and has been a healthy scratch for seven consecutive games, signaling the team's confidence in their young netminders. While relying on rookie goaltenders in the playoffs is unconventional, history shows it can be successful, as demonstrated by Matt Murray winning consecutive Stanley Cups with Pittsburgh in his first two NHL seasons.
"We're confident in both," Newhook emphasized. "I think they've proven they can be good goalies in this league and step up when needed. Regardless of who it is, it's behind us. We're confident in both those guys."
Team Resilience and Playoff Positioning
The victory against Carolina marked Montreal's 24th comeback win this season, demonstrating the team's resilience even when facing early deficits against top opponents. This characteristic has been crucial to their success as they position themselves for a second consecutive playoff appearance.
As the Canadiens prepare to face a surging Columbus Blue Jackets team that recently moved into second place in the Metropolitan Division, all eyes will be on Dobes to continue his strong play and maintain his grip on the starting goaltender position during the critical final stretch of the regular season.
