Colorado Buffaloes Quarterback Dominiq Ponder Dies in Tragic Tesla Crash
Emergency dispatch audio from first responders has been released, providing harrowing details of the accident that claimed the life of University of Colorado Buffaloes quarterback Dominiq Ponder. The 23-year-old athlete died in a single-car crash in Boulder, Colorado, early Sunday morning after losing control of his 2023 Tesla Model 3, according to the Colorado State Patrol.
Details of the Fatal Incident
The crash occurred when Ponder, heading west on Baseline Road, attempted to navigate a curved right-hand turn. The vehicle swerved into the eastbound lane, plowed through a guardrail, struck an electrical line pole, and then rolled down an embankment. Police reported that the car burst into flames, and speed is suspected to have been a factor in the accident.
According to the dispatch audio obtained by the New York Post, the initial call came in at 3:01 a.m. regarding a transformer on fire in the area. Witnesses later described seeing a "glow" above the scene, which the dispatcher indicated could be from a car fire. "You’re responding to Baseline and Newland for what we now believe is going to be a car accident that has caused the transformer to blow," the dispatcher said. "Several RPs advise that they can see a glow from it."
Approximately ten minutes later, a first responder found Ponder unconscious and not breathing in the driver's seat, noting that the vehicle was not on fire at that time. The firefighter declared it an "obvious death," and Ponder's body was transported to the Boulder County Coroner’s Office for an autopsy. The crash remains under investigation by authorities.
Tributes from Coach and Teammates
Colorado Buffaloes head coach Deion Sanders announced Ponder's death on social media, expressing deep sorrow and calling the quarterback one of his favorites. "God please comfort the Ponder family, friends & Loved ones," Sanders wrote. "Dom was one of my favourites! He was Loved, Respected & a Born Leader. Let’s pray for all that knew him & had the opportunity to be in his presence. Lord you’re receiving a good 1. Comfort us Lord Comfort us."
Colorado athletic director Fernando Lovo also issued a statement to ESPN, saying, "The entire CU Athletics family is devastated at the tragic passing of Dominiq Ponder. He epitomized the values of passion, enthusiasm, leadership, toughness and intelligence that were revered by his teammates and coaches alike. Our hearts go out to his family and all of his teammates during this difficult time." The football program's official social media account posted a tribute, vowing to honor Ponder's life and spirit.
Ponder's Role and Legacy
Dominiq Ponder began his college football career at Bethune-Cookman University in Florida before transferring to Colorado, where he spent the past two seasons as a backup quarterback. A native of Opa Locka, Florida, he played in two games last season, recording two rushes and one pass attempt.
Despite the tragedy, the team decided to proceed with its first scheduled spring practice on Monday, as defensive back Ben Finneseth explained that it was what Ponder would have wanted. "Everything that we’re going to do moving forward is for him," Finneseth said. "Coach Prime asked us if we wanted to work Monday. We decided, as a team, Dom wouldn’t miss the day. He wouldn’t miss the day of workouts. That’s what he would’ve wanted for us. He would have said, 'Life’s got to move on. We’ve got championships to win and we still have goals, and the clocks are still rolling.'"
The University of Colorado community continues to mourn the loss of a promising young athlete, with investigations ongoing into the circumstances of the crash.
