Canucks Prospect Riley Patterson Eyes AHL Opportunity After Strong Junior Season
Vancouver Canucks prospect Riley Patterson has swiftly shifted gears following the conclusion of his junior hockey season, immediately reaching out to his NHL club to express his readiness for more action this year. The 20-year-old centre, selected by the Canucks with the 125th overall pick in the 2024 NHL Draft, is set to join the AHL's Abbotsford Canucks for their final two weeks of the campaign. This move comes as Abbotsford prepares for four road games, starting with a matchup against the Calgary Wranglers on Friday.
Patterson's Impressive Performance and Development
Patterson wrapped up his season with the Niagara IceDogs, where he tallied four goals and eight points in a five-game playoff loss to the Barrie Colts. During the regular season, he achieved career highs with 40 goals and 84 points in 60 games, significantly surpassing his previous bests of 29 goals and 62 points set in the 2023-24 season with Barrie. His offensive prowess has not gone unnoticed, with Mike Komisarek, a former NHL defenceman and part of the Canucks' player-development department, praising Patterson's elevated play and eagerness to learn.
"He couldn't wait to get to Abby. He was ready to go. I think it's going to set him up, putting him in a great spot for next year," Komisarek remarked. "He's going to get familiar with that coaching staff. He's going to be a sponge. He's going to absorb as much as he can and get feedback and awareness. It's a good kind of stepping stone. He's going to come back hungry in September."
Challenges and Opportunities for Fourth-Round Picks
Fourth-round NHL draft picks often face uncertain paths to success, but Patterson's recent performance and dedication have positioned him favorably. The Canucks demonstrated their confidence in him by signing him to a three-year, entry-level contract in September. Komisarek highlighted Patterson's improved defensive play and overall growth, emphasizing the importance of earning trust on and off the ice.
"We want the puck on his stick as much as we can get it. How can we earn those opportunities? It's the compete, the battles, the sticking his nose in there," Komisarek explained. "He did that. He was above the puck and he was working as hard coming back in the zone and in the corners as he was when the puck was on his stick."
Insights on Other Canucks Prospects
Komisarek also shared updates on several other promising players in the Canucks' system:
- Braeden Cootes: The 19-year-old centre, a 2025 first-round pick, is praised for his leadership and versatility as he prepares for the WHL playoffs with the Prince Albert Raiders.
- Gabriel Chiarot: A 2025 sixth-round winger, Chiarot is noted for his work ethic and physical play, having signed an entry-level contract alongside Patterson.
- Kieren Dervin: This 2025 third-round forward, set to join Penn State in the NCAA, is recognized for his raw talent and offensive skills, though he requires further development.
- Aleksei Medvedev: An 18-year-old goaltender from the 2025 second round, Medvedev faced competition in London but gained valuable experience, according to Komisarek.
- Parker Alcos: A 2024 sixth-round defenceman with the Kelowna Rockets, Alcos is committed to Quinnipiac University and has shown growth in his skating and defensive abilities.
As the Canucks continue to nurture their prospects, Patterson's transition to the AHL represents a critical step in his journey toward the NHL, with the organization optimistic about his future contributions.
