Former Trump White House official Sarah Matthews on Thursday said it is actually 'funny' how out-of-touch Donald Trump is right now, and he does not realize it.
On Thursday's broadcast of CNN's 'OutFront,' the former deputy White House press secretary-turned-Trump critic warned that Republicans are 'definitely going to lose the House' in the 2026 midterms and warned there is now a 'growing possibility' they could lose control of the Senate as well.
'Which is something I would not have said six months ago,' she admitted.
Matthews pointed to a growing disconnect between Trump and voters.
'Obviously, we've seen Trump's unpopularity just continue to grow because of things like his war of choice with Iran, rising gas prices, him failing to bring down grocery prices like he said he would,' she said.
'And then him focusing on these strange priorities, these pet projects, vanity projects if you will, like the ballroom, like the reflecting pool that he keeps showing charts of at every single press conference,' Matthews added.
'It's so funny because I don't think he's capable of seeing how out of touch it is,' she argued, suggesting many voters had been willing to overlook his controversies in his first term because they felt they were benefiting financially.
They were maybe 'willing to give him a longer leash than they are now because they looked at things like the economy and they thought, 'Oh well, my 401k is doing great and I don't like the mean tweets but he's kinda crazy but I like this thing he's doing.''
'That's not happening any more,' she said. 'People are frustrated and that frustration is continuing to grow.'
