Canadiens Stage Dramatic Comeback to Defeat Kings 4-3 in Los Angeles
With their season teetering on the edge after consecutive losses, the Montreal Canadiens desperately needed a spark. On Saturday night at Crypto.com Arena, they found it in a thrilling 4-3 comeback victory over the Los Angeles Kings, snapping a two-game skid and injecting new life into their campaign.
Slafkovsky Shines as Offensive Catalyst
The hero of the night was 21-year-old Slovak forward Juraj Slafkovsky, who broke out of a post-Olympic scoring drought in spectacular fashion. Slafkovsky, a former first-round draft pick, recorded two goals and an assist, including the game-winning setup to Nick Suzuki with less than five minutes remaining in regulation.
"You want to be the guy that changes the momentum," Slafkovsky said postgame. "It's important. It's my fourth year. I expect to get better each and every year."
His performance was particularly significant as it marked his 23rd goal of the season, making him just the third Canadiens player in 35 years age 21 or younger to reach that milestone, joining Cole Caufield and Valeri Bure.
Dobes Stands Tall in Net
While Slafkovsky provided the offensive fireworks, goaltender Jakub Dobes was the defensive backbone that made the comeback possible. Despite recent criticism, Dobes stopped 39 shots for a .923 save percentage, including several spectacular saves in the final minutes to preserve the victory.
"I feel like I bounced back better," Dobes said. "I accomplished that today. I just tried to be myself. I just played my game."
Head coach Martin St. Louis acknowledged Dobes's crucial contribution: "I felt like Dobes was a big difference. Give credit to L.A. They played a really good game."
Statistical Highlights and Team Performance
The victory marked Montreal's 20th comeback win of the season and improved their record to 10-0-1 on the road when Slafkovsky scores. It also ended a nine-game losing streak against the Kings dating back to October 2021.
Other notable performances included:
- Nick Suzuki contributed the game-winning goal and registered five shots on net
- Jake Evans opened the scoring early in the second period
- Mike Matheson led all skaters with 24:25 of ice time
- The Canadiens won 51.1% of faceoffs despite being outhit 32-21
California Road Trip Results
The win gave Montreal a 1-1-1 record on their week-long California swing, providing a respectable return from a challenging road trip. The team now returns home to face the struggling Toronto Maple Leafs on Tuesday night, having moved into third place in the Atlantic Division.
"The first period was pretty slow for us," Suzuki admitted. "There wasn't a lot of flow. I think the hockey gods were trying to test us again. It was definitely a better effort from the guys."
For the Kings, the loss continued their home struggles, dropping them to 10-15-7 at Crypto.com Arena this season. Scott Laughton, playing his first game for Los Angeles following a trade from Toronto, scored his first goal with his new team.
The Canadiens' resilience was on full display as they overcame a sluggish start that saw them manage just one shot in the first period—their lowest single-period output since November 2023, which coincidentally also occurred in Los Angeles.
