Canadians Express Disappointment Over Team Canada's 2026 Winter Olympics Showing

A recent poll has revealed that a majority of Canadians feel let down by Team Canada's performance at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milano-Cortina, Italy. The survey, conducted by Liaison Strategies, indicates widespread disappointment following what many consider a subpar medal tally and a heartbreaking loss in men's ice hockey.

Poll Highlights Significant Shift in Public Perception

According to the poll results released on Wednesday, 60% of Canadians now believe Team Canada performed worse than expected at the Winter Games. This marks a stark contrast from pre-Games expectations, where only 12% predicted Canada would do worse. David Valentin, principal of Liaison Strategies, commented on the findings, stating, "While expectations were high heading into the Games, the reality of the results has led to a significant reassessment by the Canadian public."

The survey, which involved 1,000 Canadians and has a margin of error of ±3.1%, was conducted between February 23 and March 7. It shows that before the Olympics, 38% of respondents expected Canada to outperform previous years, but post-Games, that optimism has largely evaporated.

Medal Count Falls Short of Expectations

Canada secured only 21 medals at the 2026 Winter Games—five gold, seven silver, and nine bronze. This total represents:

  • Three fewer medals than at the 2006 Turin Games
  • Eight fewer than Canada's best-ever showing of 29 medals in PyeongChang 2018
  • The country's sixth-worst performance in Winter Olympics history

Notably, the 2026 medal count is the lowest for Canada in 24 years, harkening back to disappointing outcomes like the 1988 Calgary Games, where Canada won just five medals and zero golds. That poor performance spurred the creation of the "Own the Podium" campaign, which later boosted Canada's Olympic success.

National Pride Takes a Hit

The poll also indicates a decline in national pride associated with Team Canada. Before the Games, 76% of Canadians said the Olympic team instilled a sense of national pride, but after the Games, that number dropped to 64%. Conversely, those who said Team Canada did not make them proud increased from 7% to 25%.

Regional analysis shows that disappointment was highest in Atlantic Canada, where 70% felt Team Canada performed worse than expected. In British Columbia, that figure was lower at 47%, still reflecting significant dissatisfaction across the country.

Support for Future Olympic Bids Remains Lukewarm

Despite the disappointment, support for Canada hosting another Olympic Games remains tepid. The poll found that 28% of Canadians oppose a future bid due to high costs. Of the 65% who would support a bid, only 23% strongly support it, while 42% would back it only if no new permanent venues are constructed.

This cautious stance suggests that Canadians are weighing the financial implications of hosting against the potential for national glory, especially in light of recent performances.

Historical Context and Future Implications

The 2026 Winter Games join a list of underwhelming performances for Canada, including the 1992 Albertville Games with seven medals and the 1976 Montreal Summer Games with zero golds. The current sentiment may prompt renewed discussions about funding and support for Canadian athletes, similar to the post-1988 initiatives that led to improved results.

As the dust settles on Milano-Cortina, the poll underscores a collective sense of letdown among Canadians, highlighting the high expectations placed on Team Canada and the emotional investment in Olympic success.
