Senators Captain Brady Tkachuk Cleared for NHL Playoffs After Injury Scare
The Ottawa Senators are gearing up for the NHL playoffs with a major boost as captain Brady Tkachuk has been medically cleared and will be ready for Game 1 of the postseason. This comes after a frightening incident during the team's recent victory over the New York Islanders that left fans and teammates concerned about his availability.
Full Participation in Practice After Medical Evaluation
Tkachuk was a full participant in Tuesday's practice at the Canadian Tire Centre after undergoing extensive medical tests. The star forward confirmed he will be ready when the Senators begin their playoff run, whether that starts on Saturday or Sunday.
"I feel great," Tkachuk stated confidently on Tuesday, putting to rest concerns about his health status. "All the tests came back. I'm good."
The Concerning Incident Against the Islanders
The scare occurred during Ottawa's 3-0 victory over the New York Islanders on Saturday when Tkachuk left the game early in the third period after taking just one 13-second shift. Initially, it appeared that New York defenseman Ryan Pulock had caught Tkachuk in the head or neck with a high stick, with the captain showing visible discomfort as he returned to the bench and needed assistance from defenseman Jake Sanderson to leave the ice.
However, Tkachuk clarified that the incident with Pulock wasn't the source of his injury. "That was one of the weirdest, scariest moments," he explained. "Nothing hit me in the head all game. When (Thomas Chabot) was turning the corner there, I just kind of lost vision."
Tkachuk described how his vision began to fade after throwing a hit in the corner, creating a nerve-wracking situation that quickly resolved itself. "When I sat down, I got everything back really quick, but it was nerve-wracking and scary. I wasn't feeling good."
Playoff Preparation and Lineup Decisions
With the Senators preparing to face either the Carolina Hurricanes or Buffalo Sabres in the first round of the playoffs, Tkachuk participated fully in the team's 40-minute skate. His availability for Wednesday's season finale against the Toronto Maple Leafs remains uncertain, but it likely makes little sense to dress him in a meaningless game with the playoffs looming.
"We'll see about tomorrow, but I'm feeling good, and I'm ready to go for what's to come," Tkachuk said regarding the final regular season game. "I took a lot of tests, precautionary stuff, but everything came back clear."
Additional Positive Injury News for Senators
The good news extended beyond Tkachuk's clearance. Defenseman Tyler Kleven, who suffered a broken jaw requiring surgery after taking a puck to the face against the Minnesota Wild on April 4, skated on his own for the first time on Tuesday and is expected to return to the ice Wednesday.
This marks the second consecutive year the Senators have clinched a playoff berth, and having their captain healthy and ready provides significant momentum as they enter the postseason. The team's medical staff conducted thorough evaluations to ensure Tkachuk's safety, with all precautionary tests returning clear results.
As Ottawa prepares for their playoff opponent, the confirmation of Tkachuk's availability removes a major uncertainty and allows the team to focus fully on their postseason preparations with their leadership core intact and ready to compete at the highest level.
