Saskatoon Blades on the Brink of Playoff Elimination After Third Straight Loss
The Prince Albert Raiders have demonstrated complete control in their Western Hockey League playoff series against the Saskatoon Blades, moving within one victory of a sweep following a decisive 4-0 win in Game 3 on Tuesday night. The contest, held at SaskTel Centre in Saskatoon, saw the Raiders extend their dominance across the series, outscoring their opponents 13-1 and outshooting them 120-55 over three games.
Raiders' Commanding Performance Leaves Blades Searching for Answers
From the opening faceoff, the Raiders established their superiority. Just three minutes into the first period, forward Brandon Gorzynski—a Dallas Stars prospect—deflected a puck past Blades goaltender Evan Gardner for what would stand as the game-winning goal. The Raiders continued their offensive pressure in the second period, with Vancouver Canucks prospect Braeden Cootes scoring twice to extend the lead to 3-0. Evan Smith sealed the victory with an empty-net goal in the final moments of the third period.
Raiders head coach Ryan McDonald praised his team's effort, stating they delivered "a real good effort" and emphasized the need to maintain pressure to close out the series. The victory was witnessed by 6,522 fans, many clad in the Raiders' green-and-white colors, who celebrated their team's performance as a testament to their Memorial Cup aspirations.
Blades' Struggles Despite Increased Effort
Blades head coach Dan DaSilva acknowledged that Game 3 represented "a better effort" from his team, with numerous scoring chances that ultimately went unconverted. He expressed concern over the psychological toll the losses are taking on his players.
"I think that our guys are feeling a bit of a weight on their shoulders, just not being able to get a balance or find the back of the net right now," DaSilva said. "Everybody in that room wants to win, they want to win every night. And, again, it's not for lack of efforts, they're giving everything they have right now and are just not being rewarded."
DaSilva emphasized the importance of maintaining belief and sticking to the process, particularly for players experiencing the second round of playoffs for the first time.
Special Teams Woes Compound Blades' Challenges
The Blades' power play struggles have been a significant factor in the series. They have converted only one of ten opportunities with the man advantage against the Raiders, and their postseason power play efficiency sits at a mere 16 percent. This inability to capitalize on special teams has hampered any comeback attempts.
Cootes, who co-leads the Raiders in postseason scoring with four goals, highlighted the team's unity and physical play as key contributors to their success. "Everybody's bought in with a common goal," he said, noting that the team's physicality has been instrumental.
Looking Ahead to Game 4
Game 4 is scheduled for Wednesday at 7 p.m. at SaskTel Centre in Saskatoon. The Blades face a must-win situation to avoid a sweep, while the Raiders aim to complete their dominant series performance and advance in the WHL playoffs. The Highway 11 rivalry has been decidedly one-sided thus far, with the Raiders proving why they are the Eastern Division's top seed and a formidable contender for the Memorial Cup.
