Auston Matthews future crucial for new Maple Leafs GM
Auston Matthews future crucial for new Maple Leafs GM

The Toronto Maple Leafs are at a crossroads, and the future of captain Auston Matthews will be the defining issue for the team's next general manager. Whether John Chayka or Scott White lands the top job, the conversation with Matthews will be paramount.

The Matthews Question

With two years remaining on his contract, Matthews' long-term commitment to the Leafs is uncertain. The new hockey boss must sit down with the 28-year-old star to discuss his role in the team's plans. According to Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman, Chayka and White are the finalists, with a decision expected early next week.

The Leafs' front office, led by MLSE CEO Keith Pelley, has emphasized a retool rather than a full rebuild. This means the new GM must convince Matthews that the roster can be improved without a complete overhaul. The team has limited salary cap flexibility and only two unrestricted free agents: forward Calle Jarnkrok and defenseman Troy Stecher. The free-agent class is thin beyond defenseman Darren Raddysh and forward Alex Tuch.

Matthews may also have input on potential trades, such as the possibility of moving young forward Matthew Knies. The captain's patience will be tested, and a wait-and-see approach may be the most realistic outcome.

Coaching Changes

The future of head coach Craig Berube is another key topic. Berube has not been fired, but Pelley stated that the GM will decide his fate. Matthews has spoken positively of Berube, but his performance has declined under the current system. In Berube's two seasons, Matthews scored 60 goals in 127 games, compared to 69 goals in 81 games under Sheldon Keefe. William Nylander also thrived in a possession-based system, posting 79 points in 65 games this season. A new coach could help Matthews regain his elite form.

The 2026 Draft Lottery

The Leafs have an 8.5% chance of winning the first overall pick and an 8.6% chance of picking second. If they land a top-two pick, they could draft Gavin McKenna or Ivar Stenberg, both projected NHL stars. Even at fifth overall, the team is likely to get an excellent prospect, though defensive prospects may take years to develop. The worst-case scenario is losing the pick to the Boston Bruins if they fall out of the top five.

If Matthews Leaves

If Matthews decides to move on, the Leafs would trade one of the best goal scorers of his generation. Despite nine playoff appearances, Matthews has not led the team past the second round. A trade would bring a package of top draft picks, prospects, or established stars. In 2028, the Leafs could use the freed cap space to pursue Connor McDavid. A Matthews departure would not be catastrophic if the new GM handles it correctly.

The next few weeks will shape the Leafs' future, and all eyes are on the Matthews conversation.
