An envoy for U.S. President Donald Trump has reportedly urged FIFA to replace Iran with Italy at this summer's World Cup, in an effort to smooth political tensions between Washington and Rome.
Envoy’s Proposal
According to the Financial Times, U.S. special envoy Paolo Zampolli suggested the swap to both FIFA president Gianni Infantino and Trump. Zampolli, an Italian native, said the move could help repair diplomatic ties after recent strains between Trump and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, exacerbated by Trump’s social media attacks against Pope Leo XIV and the ongoing Iran conflict.
“I confirm I have suggested to Trump and Infantino that Italy replace Iran at the World Cup. I’m an Italian native and it would be a dream to see the Azzurri at a U.S.-hosted tournament. With four titles, they have the pedigree to justify inclusion,” Zampolli told the Financial Times.
Italy’s Qualification Status
Italy failed to qualify for the tournament, losing a playoff final to Bosnia and Herzegovina in March via a penalty shootout. Bosnia secured a spot in Group B and a match against Canada on June 12.
Iran’s Stance
Iran’s participation has been questioned since U.S. and Israeli air strikes on the Gulf nation began in March. However, the Iranian national team issued a statement confirming it is prepared and plans to compete. FIFA declined to comment on the report, with president Gianni Infantino stating, “the Iranian team is coming, for sure.” At a recent Washington conference, Infantino expressed hope that the conflict would be peacefully resolved by the World Cup kickoff next month.
“We hope that by then, of course, the situation will be a peaceful one. That would definitely help,” Infantino said. “But Iran has to come if they are to represent their people. They have qualified … They really want to play and they should play.”
Italy’s Response
The Italian government dismissed the replacement suggestion. Sports minister Andrea Abodi told Sky News that “qualification is done on the pitch,” calling it inappropriate to take Iran’s place.
