Spieth Shoots 62, Trails by 1 at Byron Nelson

Jordan Spieth made a strong opening statement at the AT&T Byron Nelson on Thursday, firing a 9-under-par 62 to sit just one shot off the lead among early finishers. The Dallas native, playing in his hometown event at TPC Craig Ranch in McKinney, Texas, carded nine birdies without a bogey in a flawless round.

Spieth, a three-time major champion, got off to a fast start with birdies on three of his first four holes. He added three more birdies on the front nine and three on the back, including a 15-foot putt on the par-4 18th to cap his round. The 62 matched his lowest round of the PGA Tour season.

"It was nice to get off to a good start in front of the home crowd," Spieth said. "I've been working hard on my game, and it's starting to come together. I'm excited for the rest of the week."

Spieth, who won the Byron Nelson in 2021, is seeking his first victory since the 2022 RBC Heritage. He entered the week ranked 35th in the FedExCup standings.

Among the early finishers, Spieth trails leader Akshay Bhatia, who shot a 61. Bhatia, 23, carded 10 birdies and one bogey to set the pace. Other notables near the top include Scottie Scheffler (63) and Will Zalatoris (64).

The tournament continues through Sunday, with the field looking to secure a spot in the field for next week's PGA Championship at Valhalla.
