Jesus Sanchez delivered a career-first grand slam, propelling the Toronto Blue Jays to a decisive 8-1 victory over the Miami Marlins on Tuesday night at Rogers Centre. The sixth-inning blast was the highlight of a six-run rally that broke open a tight game.
Game-Changing Inning
The Blue Jays entered the sixth inning trailing 1-0 before their offense erupted. With the bases loaded, Sanchez launched a 2-1 pitch over the right-field wall, sending the crowd of 28,000 into a frenzy. The grand slam was Sanchez's 12th home run of the season and his first in a Toronto uniform.
Manager John Schneider praised Sanchez's patience at the plate. "He's been working hard on his approach, and it paid off tonight. That swing changed the whole game," Schneider said.
Pitching Dominance
Blue Jays starter Kevin Gausman (7-2) earned the win, tossing six innings of one-run ball while striking out eight. He allowed just four hits and walked two. Relievers Tim Mayza and Jordan Romano combined for three scoreless innings to seal the victory.
Marlins starter Braxton Garrett (4-4) took the loss, surrendering four runs on six hits over 5 1/3 innings.
Offensive Support
In addition to Sanchez's heroics, Lenyn Sosa contributed two hits and an RBI, while George Springer added a solo home run in the eighth inning. The Blue Jays finished with 10 hits and drew four walks.
The win improved Toronto's record to 32-22, keeping them in contention for the American League East lead. The Marlins fell to 28-26.
Looking Ahead
The two teams will meet again Wednesday for the second game of the three-game series. Right-hander Jose Berrios (5-3) is scheduled to start for Toronto against Miami's Sandy Alcantara (4-5).
