The Saskatchewan Roughriders unveiled their 2025 Grey Cup championship banner during their home opener on Saturday, but the team's attention is already fixed on the 2026 season. Despite the celebration, players and coaches emphasized that they have not dwelled on past success.
Team Focused on Future
Head coach Corey Mace stated, "We haven't even looked at it. The banner is for the fans and the organization, but our job is to win another one." Quarterback Trevor Harris echoed the sentiment, noting that the team is hungry to repeat as champions.
The Roughriders defeated the Montreal Alouettes in the 2025 Grey Cup, securing their first title since 2013. The banner ceremony took place before kickoff against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, a rematch of the West Final.
Home Opener Atmosphere
Fans at Mosaic Stadium cheered as the banner was raised to the rafters. The team wore special commemorative patches and hosted a pre-game celebration. Despite the festive atmosphere, the Roughriders fell to the Blue Bombers 24-21 in a hard-fought contest.
"It was emotional seeing the banner go up, but we have to move on," said defensive end Anthony Lanier. "We want to create our own legacy in 2026."
The Roughriders now sit at 1-1 on the season, with their next game against the BC Lions on the road.
