Roughriders finalize 2026 roster: cuts, practice squad, and key moves

The Saskatchewan Roughriders have finalized their roster for the beginning of the 2026 CFL season. After a three-week training camp and a pair of pre-season games, the Green and White cut 19 players on Saturday while adding 13 players to the practice roster. Three players were moved to the injured list to begin the season, while two were sent back to their respective universities.

Most notably, the Roughriders did not cut a quarterback and will begin the season with all four — Trevor Harris, Tommy Stevens, Jack Coan, and Brayden Schager — on the active roster. Only three quarterbacks can dress for a game, meaning either Coan or Schager will likely be added to the one-game injured list once the season begins.

No veteran starters on offence or defence were released by Saskatchewan. However, the Green and White are making a change on special teams as Oscar Chapman has won the punting job over Jesse Mirco, last year’s punter, who was released. Saskatchewan will also have a new kicker this year after Brett Lauther was released in the off-season. Alex Hale has won the job over Jonathan Kim, who was among the releases on Saturday.

The Roughriders also had a healthy battle at American receiver. Jaylen Johnson is the lone rookie to crack the active roster, while Johnny Johnson and Mathew Sexton made the practice roster. D’Sean Mimbs won the Canadian backup spot over Daniel Wiebe, who made the practice roster.

Additionally, the Roughriders cut a few players who were with the team as backups last year, including running back Mario Anderson, defensive back Benny Sapp III, and defensive lineman Chico Bennett.

The Roughriders are on a bye in Week 1 of the season before returning to the practice field on June 9 ahead of the season opener on June 13 at 5 p.m. against the visiting B.C. Lions.
