The Saskatchewan Roughriders are tired of being overlooked. As the reigning Grey Cup champions, they feel they deserve more respect from the CFL and its fans. After a thrilling 31-27 victory over the B.C. Lions in their regular-season opener at Mosaic Stadium, the message was clear: don't underestimate them.
A Chip on Their Shoulder
Head coach Corey Mace expressed the team's mindset: 'We wanna know what we look like when we face adversity.' The Roughriders entered the game with a chip on their shoulder, having been widely considered underdogs despite winning the 2025 Grey Cup. Many pre-season polls had picked the Lions as favourites to win the 2026 championship.
Before the game, the team unveiled their 2025 Grey Cup banner in front of an announced crowd of 30,168 fans. The celebration set the tone for a hard-fought battle that mirrored last year's West final comeback win over the same opponent.
Key Performances
Quarterback Trevor Harris led the charge with 417 passing yards and three touchdowns. Samuel Emilus was a standout, catching three touchdown passes. Strong-side linebacker Antoine Brooks Jr. contributed 13 tackles, while the rebuilt defensive line applied consistent pressure on Lions quarterback Nathan Rourke.
Harris didn't hide his feelings after the game, saying with snark: 'It's tough to win in this league. Especially against everybody's pick to win the Grey Cup.'
Roster Changes and Challenges
The Roughriders have undergone significant changes since their championship win, with 16 players missing from the 45-man roster. The special teams unit was completely revamped, featuring new long snapper Aaron Crawford, kicker Alex Hale, punter Oscar Chapman, and return specialist James Letcher. Despite concerns, all performed well in the opener.
Defensively, the line saw only one returning starter, Mike Rose. New additions James Vaughters and rookie Desmond Evans each sacked Rourke once, using a four-man rush called by new defensive co-ordinator Joshua Bell.
Injuries and Outlook
The Lions were hampered by injuries to receivers Seven McGee and Jevon Cottoy, while the Roughriders lost all-star defensive back Rolan Milligan Jr. to a shoulder injury that may sideline him for the next game against the Calgary Stampeders. Calgary is the only team Saskatchewan failed to beat during last year's Grey Cup run.
The Roughriders dominated early, scoring 17 points on their first three possessions. However, a late touchdown drive by Rourke put the Lions ahead 27-24 before Saskatchewan rallied for the win. The victory sends a strong message: this team is ready to defend its title.
