The Ottawa Charge opened their Professional Women's Hockey League playoff campaign with a 2-1 loss to the Boston Fleet at the Tsongas Centre in Lowell, Massachusetts, on Thursday night. This marked the first time in five meetings this season that the two teams settled matters within regulation time.
Game Summary
After winning three of four regular-season contests against Boston, all of which were decided in either a shootout or overtime, Ottawa found itself on the losing end in a more conventional finish. The best-of-five semifinal series now sees the Fleet holding a 1-0 advantage, with Game 2 scheduled for the same venue on Saturday at 7 p.m.
Goaltending Duel
The much-anticipated matchup between former college teammates and Olympic gold medal-winning goaltenders for the United States did not materialize as expected through the first 40 minutes. Instead, it was Charge netminder Gwyneth Philips who kept her team in the game with a series of stellar saves, while Fleet goaltender Aerin Frankel had minimal action at the other end.
Ottawa did not register its first shot on goal until 6:53 remained in the opening period. The Fleet outshot the Charge 15-5 in the middle frame, holding a commanding 22-10 edge through two periods. Despite being outplayed and outshot 28-18 overall, the Charge managed to hold a 1-0 lead until late in the second period.
Key Saves and Turning Point
Philips made several crucial saves to keep Ottawa ahead. In the first period, she slid across the crease to deny Jessie Eldridge on what appeared to be a sure goal. In the second period, she showed quick reflexes to stop Alina Muller on an in-close redirect. However, the Fleet eventually broke through with two goals late in the second period, and Ottawa could not generate enough offense in the final 20 minutes to extend the game.
Looking Ahead
The Charge will need to regroup quickly as they face a must-win situation in Game 2 on Saturday. The series shifts to Ottawa for Game 3 and potentially Game 4 if necessary. Boston will look to build on their momentum and take a commanding series lead.
