Kazuma Okamoto delivered a pivotal solo home run in the sixth inning, propelling the Toronto Blue Jays to a 2-1 victory over the Miami Marlins in the rubber match of their three-game series on Wednesday at Rogers Centre.
Okamoto's blast, his 12th of the season, broke a 1-1 deadlock and proved to be the difference-maker. The Blue Jays' bullpen held firm after the go-ahead homer, securing the win for starter Kevin Gausman, who pitched six strong innings, allowing one run on five hits while striking out seven.
The Marlins struck first in the top of the second inning when Jazz Chisholm Jr. drove in a run with a double. Toronto responded in the fourth, tying the game on a sacrifice fly by Vladimir Guerrero Jr. that scored George Springer.
Gausman improved to 8-3 on the season, while Marlins starter Sandy Alcantara took the loss despite a solid outing, allowing two runs over seven innings. Jordan Romano earned his 15th save with a perfect ninth inning.
The victory gave the Blue Jays the series win and improved their record to 33-22, keeping them in contention in the American League East. The Marlins fell to 28-27.
