The Edmonton Oilers are grappling with significant issues at the centre position early in their NHL playoff series against the Anaheim Ducks. Captain Connor McDavid was seen at Rogers Place on Thursday morning, undergoing treatment on his right ankle after a collision in Game 2. McDavid described the injury as being "just rolled over a bit," but his availability for Game 3 remains a key concern.
McDavid's Injury and Performance
McDavid had a subpar performance in Game 2, despite playing 24 minutes. He missed several shifts in the second period and was examined by team doctor Dhiren Naidu. However, he returned for eight shifts in the third period, logging nearly nine minutes. Coach Kris Knoblauch stated there is "no update" on McDavid's condition but expressed confidence in his readiness for Game 3. Sore ankles can be unpredictable, as seen with Jason Dickinson, who scored two goals in Game 1 after recovering from an ankle issue but was held out of Game 2.
Centre Depth Concerns
The Oilers are also dealing with an injury to centre Adam Henrique, who collided with teammate Kasperi Kapanen late in the first period of Game 1 and may have suffered a knee injury. Henrique played only six shifts in Game 1 and missed Game 2 entirely. He will not travel with the team for the two-game road trip to Anaheim. With fourth-line winger Max Jones likely out for the entire first round due to a leg ailment, the Oilers currently have only 12 forwards on their roster.
Other Lineup Issues
Beyond injuries, the Oilers face several on-ice challenges:
- Five-on-Five Production: Only one line has consistently generated offense at even strength: the unit of Vasily Podkolzin, Leon Draisaitl, and Kasperi Kapanen, which has combined for three goals and 10 points. The de facto first line featuring McDavid, Zach Hyman, and either Matt Savoie or Ryan Nugent-Hopkins has managed just one goal and two points.
- Ryan Nugent-Hopkins' Drought: Nugent-Hopkins, who has been shifting between centre and left wing, has not registered a shot in the first two games and has only one assist. During Draisaitl's absence for the final 14 games of the regular season, Nugent-Hopkins recorded six points, including three goals. However, his offensive production has stalled for five weeks.
- Second Period Struggles: The Oilers have built early leads with strong first periods, outscoring the Ducks 3-1 in the opening frame of both games. However, they have been outscored 6-2 in the second period, a stark contrast to their regular-season performance where they were strongest in the middle frame (100 goals for, 89 against).
The Oilers will need to address these issues quickly as they head to Anaheim for Game 3, with the series tied 1-1.
