The Toronto Maple Leafs have secured the first overall pick in the 2026 NHL Draft after winning the draft lottery on Tuesday night. The team, which originally held the fifth slot, had just an 8.5% chance of landing the top selection.
This development is a franchise-altering moment for the Leafs, who recently missed the Stanley Cup playoffs for the first time in a decade. The win provides a significant boost to the organization's future prospects.
Top Prospects for the Leafs
Wingers Gavin McKenna and Ivar Stenberg are considered the top prospects available in the 2026 draft. Both players are expected to slot nicely into the Leafs' top line, offering immediate offensive potential.
New Leafs executive Mats Sundin, a former first overall pick himself, represented the club at the lottery. He expressed his excitement for the fan base, stating, "It's great to get the first pick. Great night, great lottery."
Impact on Off-Season Plans
The off-season challenges for new general manager John Chayka suddenly appear less daunting. This marks the third time the Leafs have held the first overall pick in franchise history. In 2016, they selected Auston Matthews, and in 1985, they chose Wendel Clark. The recent lottery win may also influence Matthews' decision to stay with the team.
The Leafs will transfer their first-round pick in either 2027 or 2028 to the Boston Bruins as part of the Brandon Carlo trade. Additionally, another first-rounder in the next two years will go to the Philadelphia Flyers in the Scott Laughton trade. However, these future considerations may become less significant given the potential impact of McKenna or Stenberg.
Remaining Draft Picks
In the other rounds of the 2026 draft, the Leafs currently hold six picks. Their second-round pick, originally owned by Buffalo, was acquired from Los Angeles via another Laughton trade. The team also has its own picks in the third and fifth rounds. A fourth-round pick, originally belonging to Anaheim, was acquired in the trade with Seattle for Bobby McMann. A fifth-round pick came from Colorado in the Nicolas Roy trade, and a sixth-round pick was acquired from San Jose in the Timothy Liljegren trade in 2024.
More details are expected to emerge as the draft approaches.
