The Toronto Blue Jays had a busy day as they welcomed back starting catcher Alejandro Kirk, designated veteran Tyler Heineman for assignment, and promoted Brandon Valenzuela to the major league roster.
Heineman's Departure
Heineman, a 34-year-old veteran who played a key role in last year's World Series run, was informed of the decision by manager John Schneider. He accepted the news professionally, understanding the nature of the catching position.
“He gets it,” Schneider said. “He’s been through it before. I think especially now, but the way the catching position is around the league, wouldn’t be surprised if some claimed him, but yeah that was tough.”
If Heineman clears waivers, he can elect free agency, though he may choose to stay with the organization at triple-A Buffalo.
Heineman appeared in 61 games last season, hitting .289 with three home runs, 20 RBIs, and an OPS of .777.
Valenzuela's Rise
Valenzuela was called up when Kirk suffered a thumb injury and quickly established himself as the everyday catcher. In eight June games entering Friday, he hit .320 with three homers and eight RBIs.
Kirk's Return
Kirk missed 68 games after fracturing his left thumb on a foul tip on April 3. His return is expected to boost the lineup with his ability to extend at-bats and work counts.
“It felt too long for me,” Kirk said through an interpreter. “It was way too long, but that’s the way it happened. I can’t control that.”
Kirk revealed he reached out to Valenzuela during his rehab, offering advice on game calling and pitcher familiarity.
Schneider plans to ease Kirk back into action, with Valenzuela continuing to see playing time. Both catchers could be in the lineup together if they are hitting well.
Injury Updates
Shane Bieber is expected to make one more start with the Bisons before returning. Reliever Yimi Garcia will also appear in Buffalo before rejoining the bullpen. Outfielder Addison Barger is rehabbing at class-A Dunedin, while Daulton Varsho was placed on the 10-day injured list with wrist inflammation, retroactive to June 10.
