In a gripping NHL playoff encounter, the Tampa Bay Lightning secured a 1-0 overtime victory over the Montreal Canadiens on Friday night at the Bell Centre. Goaltender Andrei Vasilevskiy was the hero for the Lightning, turning aside all 32 shots he faced to earn the shutout and the win.
Overtime Drama Unfolds
The game remained scoreless through regulation, with both goaltenders putting on a clinic. Vasilevskiy's counterpart, Samuel Montembeault of the Canadiens, was equally impressive, stopping 29 shots before the decisive moment in overtime.
The winning goal came at 7:23 of the extra period when Lightning forward Brayden Point fired a wrist shot from the slot that beat Montembeault glove side. The goal was set up by a crisp pass from Nikita Kucherov, who had been held in check for most of the night.
Vasilevskiy's Dominance
Vasilevskiy, a former Vezina Trophy winner, was at his best when it mattered most. He made several key saves in the third period, including a pad stop on a breakaway by Canadiens rookie Ivan Demidov, who was a constant threat all night.
"He's our backbone," Lightning coach Jon Cooper said of Vasilevskiy. "When the game is on the line, he elevates his game. That's what elite goaltenders do."
Canadiens' Frustration
The Canadiens, playing in front of a raucous home crowd, controlled long stretches of the game but could not solve Vasilevskiy. Montreal's power play, which had been effective in the series, went 0-for-4 on the night.
"It's frustrating," Canadiens captain Nick Suzuki said. "We had chances, but he's one of the best in the world. We have to find a way to get pucks past him."
Series Shifts
The victory gives the Lightning a 2-1 lead in the best-of-seven series, with Game 4 scheduled for Sunday in Montreal. The Canadiens will look to even the series before it shifts back to Tampa Bay.
For Vasilevskiy, the shutout was his 10th career playoff blanking, moving him into a tie for 15th on the NHL's all-time list.
