The Ottawa Senators continued their busy week of roster moves on Friday, acquiring winger Andre Burakovsky from the Chicago Blackhawks in exchange for a sixth-round pick in the 2028 NHL Draft. The deal was announced hours before the first round of the NHL draft at KeyBank Center in Buffalo.
Fourth Trade in a Week for Senators
The acquisition of Burakovsky marked the fourth trade executed by Steve Staios, the Senators' president of hockey operations and general manager, in a span of just six days. Earlier in the week, Staios sent captain Brady Tkachuk to the Florida Panthers on Sunday and acquired winger William Eklund from the San Jose Sharks on Tuesday. The team also traded for backup goaltender Samuel Ersson from the Toronto Maple Leafs on Friday, just hours before the Burakovsky deal.
Burakovsky Brings Championship Pedigree
Burakovsky, 31, is a two-time Stanley Cup champion, having won with the Washington Capitals in 2018 and the Colorado Avalanche in 2022. The left-winger is known for his skill and playmaking ability, and he can slot into various roles in the lineup. In the 2025-26 season with the Blackhawks, he recorded 11 goals and 22 assists for 33 points in 75 games.
“Andre adds skill and playmaking ability to our forward group,” Staios said. “We are happy to add the pedigree of a two-time Stanley Cup champion.”
Impact on Senators’ Forward Group
Burakovsky's arrival is expected to bolster the Senators' forward depth, providing a veteran presence with playoff experience. He joins a team that has undergone significant changes this week, including the departure of their long-time captain. The Senators are looking to build a competitive roster for the upcoming season, and Burakovsky's ability to contribute offensively could be key.
The trade for Burakovsky required only a future sixth-round pick, a relatively low cost for a player with his resume. The Blackhawks, who are in a rebuilding phase, continue to accumulate draft capital as they reshape their roster.
