It would be a mistake to sell low on Trent Frederic. The Edmonton Oilers power forward had a rough 2025-26 season, but there are reasons to believe he can bounce back in 2026-27.
Frederic's Disappointing Season
In 2025-26, Frederic played 74 games, recording only four goals and three assists with a minus-15 plus-minus rating. This performance came after he signed a seven-year, $3.85 million per year contract with the Oilers in the summer of 2025. His playoff performance in 2025 was also lackluster, with one goal and three assists in 22 games.
Why Stan Bowman Signed Him
Oilers GM Stan Bowman defended the signing, citing Frederic's unique skill set. Bowman noted Frederic's physicality, intimidation factor, and versatility to play both center and wing. He also pointed to Frederic's two strong seasons in Boston (2022-23 and 2023-24), where he scored 31 and 40 points respectively.
Bowman said on the 100% Hockey podcast: "He's a very unique player with the skillset that he has. He's a big guy, he's a physical player, he's not afraid. He's got that intimidation factor where he'll go to the other team's bench and challenge anybody."
Hope for a Turnaround
Despite the poor season, Frederic's previous success suggests he can regain his form. The Oilers invested in him long-term, and selling low now would be premature. With a full offseason to reset, Frederic could return to being the gritty, productive forward Edmonton needs.
Bowman added: "I think he's got the game in him. And when you add all that up, it comes down to he's a very unique player."
