The Regina Pats have officially named David Bell as the 44th head coach in the franchise's storied history, the team announced on June 22, 2026. Bell replaces interim head coach Brad Herauf, who took over mid-season after the departure of John Paddock. The announcement was made by Pats general manager Alan Millar during a press conference at the Brandt Centre.
David Bell's Coaching Background
Bell brings a wealth of experience from the Western Hockey League (WHL), having previously served as head coach for the Spokane Chiefs and as an assistant coach for the Edmonton Oil Kings. He also spent time as an associate coach with the Vancouver Giants. According to Millar, Bell's track record of developing young talent and his familiarity with the WHL's competitive landscape made him the ideal candidate. “David’s leadership and commitment to player development align perfectly with our goals for the Pats,” Millar said.
Team Performance and Expectations
The Pats finished the 2025-26 season with a 28-36-4 record, missing the playoffs for the third consecutive year. Bell is tasked with reversing the team's fortunes and building a playoff-contending roster. In his introductory remarks, Bell emphasized a focus on defensive structure and special teams. “We have a young core that is hungry to learn, and I’m excited to implement a system that will bring out the best in them,” Bell stated.
Franchise Legacy and Future Plans
The Regina Pats, one of the WHL's oldest franchises, have a rich history dating back to 1917. Bell becomes the 44th head coach in that lineage. The team has already begun roster adjustments, including trades and draft picks, to support Bell's vision. Season ticket sales have seen a modest uptick following the announcement, according to team officials.
