Raptors Downplay Ingram's Struggles Ahead of Key Game

The Toronto Raptors appear to be taking a patient approach regarding Brandon Ingram's scoring struggles as they prepare for the most critical game of the season. The two-time All-Star has averaged only 12 points per game in the series against the Cleveland Cavaliers, ranking fourth on the team, while shooting below 40% from the field over three contests.

Ingram's Statistical Decline

Ingram has missed just two fewer shots than Scottie Barnes, despite Barnes attempting 17 more field goals. Similarly, he has misfired on four more shots than RJ Barrett, even though Barrett has taken 12 additional attempts. Beyond scoring, Ingram has been uncharacteristically turnover-prone and has struggled defensively against Cleveland's offensive schemes.

Despite these issues, the Raptors' coaching staff and players have publicly maintained their support for Ingram. Head coach Darko Rajakovic stated, "I see that he's doing an outstanding job for us," when asked if the poor series was affecting Ingram's mindset.

Team's Perspective on Ingram's Role

Rajakovic emphasized that Cleveland's defensive focus on Ingram has created opportunities for others. "The way they decided to guard him, it's opening up a lot of stuff for us," he explained. "He's creating a lot of gravity for a reason, and that's opening up a lot of stuff for the whole team."

Center Jakob Poeltl echoed this sentiment, noting that Ingram's presence demands attention from defenders. "When they send two or three guys at him, somebody else has to step up and make use of that space," Poeltl said. So far, Barnes and Barrett have been the primary beneficiaries, along with Jamison Battle, who swung Game 3 in Toronto's favor with a strong fourth-quarter performance.

Ingram's Self-Assessment

Ingram acknowledged his struggles but remained confident, drawing on past experiences. "I tell myself to keep going. I've been in this situation a bunch of times, where shots weren't falling and things weren't going my way," he said. He also praised Barrett's resilience amid trade rumors, noting that Barrett has proven his value on the floor.

Ironically, Ingram now finds himself in a similar position, having been benched during key moments of the series. Rajakovic expressed confidence that Ingram would improve as the series progresses, a sentiment the player shares.

The Raptors and Cavaliers face off on Sunday afternoon in what promises to be a pivotal matchup.
