Emerson Hancock pitched six sharp innings, and the Seattle Mariners defeated the Toronto Blue Jays 4-0 on Sunday. Hancock allowed just three hits and struck out five, lowering his ERA to 3.82.
Garver's homer highlights offensive attack
Mitch Garver broke the game open with a two-run homer in the fourth inning off Blue Jays starter Kevin Gausman. Garver's 14th home run of the season gave the Mariners a 3-0 lead.
Seattle added an insurance run in the seventh on an RBI single by Julio Rodriguez. The Mariners improved to 48-36, while the Blue Jays fell to 44-40.
Relievers close out shutout
Andres Munoz and Matt Brash each pitched a scoreless inning to complete the combined four-hit shutout. Brash earned his 12th save of the season.
According to Mariners manager Scott Servais, "Emerson was outstanding today. He commanded the zone and kept their hitters off balance. That's the kind of start we need from him."
Gausman struggles for Toronto
Kevin Gausman (7-5) took the loss, allowing three runs on six hits over six innings. He walked two and struck out seven.
The Blue Jays managed only four hits, all singles, and did not advance a runner past second base after the third inning.
