Marina Mabrey tied the WNBA single-game scoring record with 53 points as the Toronto Tempo routed the Los Angeles Sparks 125-97 on Thursday night.
Record performance
Mabrey connected on 18 of 28 field goals, including 9 of 15 from three-point range, and made all eight of her free-throw attempts. Her 53 points matched the record set by Liz Cambage in 2018 and later tied by Breanna Stewart in 2023.
"It's an incredible feeling to be in such elite company," Mabrey said after the game. "My teammates found me in great spots, and everything just felt right tonight."
Game details
The Tempo (12-5) led wire-to-wire, building a 68-48 halftime advantage. Toronto shot 56.5% from the field and hit 18 three-pointers as a team. Dearica Hamby added 22 points and 10 rebounds, while Arike Ogunbowale chipped in 18 points and 11 assists.
For the Sparks (7-10), Nneka Ogwumike scored 28 points and Cameron Brink had 16 points and 12 rebounds. Los Angeles struggled defensively, allowing Toronto to score 40 points in the third quarter alone.
Impact and context
Mabrey's performance came in front of a sold-out crowd of 19,800 at Scotiabank Arena, marking the Tempo's largest home attendance of the season. The win extended Toronto's winning streak to five games and moved them into second place in the WNBA standings.
"She was unstoppable tonight," Tempo head coach James Wade said. "We just kept feeding her, and she delivered time after time."
