Jonathan Toews Expected to Announce Retirement Friday

Winnipeg Jets center Jonathan Toews is expected to announce his retirement from the National Hockey League on Friday, according to sources close to the player. The 38-year-old forward, who has been sidelined with a chronic immune system disorder, will make the announcement at a press conference in Winnipeg.

A Storied Career

Toews, a three-time Stanley Cup champion with the Chicago Blackhawks, has been one of the most respected players in the NHL. He also won a gold medal with Team Canada at the 2010 Winter Olympics and was named the Conn Smythe Trophy winner as playoff MVP in 2010.

Toews has not played since the 2023-24 season due to health issues. He was acquired by the Winnipeg Jets in a trade before the 2024-25 season but never suited up for the team.

Health Struggles

In 2020, Toews was diagnosed with Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome (CIRS), which caused him to miss the entire 2020-21 season. He returned to play but continued to struggle with symptoms. In 2024, he announced he would step away from hockey indefinitely to focus on his health.

Toews finishes his NHL career with 372 goals and 511 assists for 883 points in 1,067 regular-season games, all with the Blackhawks. He added 45 goals and 61 assists in 137 playoff games.

Legacy

Toews is widely regarded as one of the best two-way forwards of his generation. He was known for his leadership, faceoff prowess, and defensive acumen. He captained the Blackhawks from 2008 to 2023, leading them to three Stanley Cup titles in 2010, 2013, and 2015.

The hockey community has already begun to pay tribute to Toews. Messages of support and appreciation have poured in from former teammates, coaches, and fans.

Toews is expected to discuss his decision and future plans during Friday's press conference. The Winnipeg Jets have scheduled a media availability for 11 a.m. CT.
