The Memphis Grizzlies have traded former NBA all-star Ja Morant to the Portland Trail Blazers, according to ESPN. In exchange, the Grizzlies receive forward Jerami Grant and forward Kris Murray, ending Morant's controversial seven-season tenure with Memphis.
Morant's Career Ups and Downs
Morant was the No. 2 overall pick in the 2019 NBA draft and won Rookie of the Year in 2020. He was named the NBA's Most Improved Player in 2022 and established himself as a downhill scoring force, touted as one of the league's biggest rising stars. However, injuries took a toll on his development; he never developed a reliable three-point shot or consistent defense.
Off-court incidents also plagued Morant, leading to multiple suspensions. In November 2025, following a loss to the Los Angeles Lakers, Morant argued with coach Tuomas Iisalo after Iisalo challenged his leadership and effort. The exchange was described as Morant addressing the coach "in a tone deemed inappropriate," resulting in a one-game team-issued suspension.
Injury and Suspension History
Morant, who turns 27 in July 2026, has been injury prone and played in only 20 games last season. His tenure with the Grizzlies was marked by flashes of brilliance overshadowed by disciplinary issues and physical setbacks.
New Opportunity in Portland
Morant now joins a Trail Blazers backcourt that includes former star guards Damian Lillard and Jrue Holiday, as well as Deni Avdija, who recently made his first all-star team. If Morant fits well, Portland has acquired an all-star talent at a discount price, giving him a chance to resurrect his career in a new environment.
