Seattle Mariners starter Logan Gilbert dominated the Toronto Blue Jays on Saturday, throwing 7 1/3 innings of one-hit ball in an 11-0 victory at T-Mobile Park. The only hit off Gilbert was a fifth-inning bloop single by Yohendrick Piñango, which center fielder Victor Robles did not attempt to catch. Gilbert struck out seven and walked none, lowering his ERA to 2.89.
Bieber's Rough Return
Blue Jays starter Shane Bieber, making his third start since returning from elbow tendinitis, allowed five runs on six hits in 4 1/3 innings. He gave up two home runs, including a grand slam to Randy Arozarena in the second inning that broke the game open. Bieber's record fell to 1-2 with a 5.40 ERA.
"I didn't have my best stuff today," Bieber said. "They made me pay for mistakes."
Combined One-Hitter
Mariners reliever Cole Wilcox recorded the final five outs without incident to complete the combined one-hitter. The Mariners have now thrown two combined one-hitters this season, both against the Blue Jays.
"Gilbert was outstanding today," Mariners manager Scott Servais said. "He had command of all his pitches and kept them off balance all game."
Springer on Family Leave
The Blue Jays placed George Springer on the family medical emergency list Saturday, extending his paternity leave. Springer is expected to rejoin the team in San Francisco for the second leg of the west coast trip. In his absence, rookie Sean Keys has impressed, hitting a home run Wednesday and collecting two hits Friday.
Okamoto Named AL Rookie of the Month
Blue Jays third baseman Kazuma Okamoto was named American League Rookie of the Month for June after hitting .286 with seven home runs and 20 RBIs. However, he made a costly defensive misplay in the second inning, cutting off a throw from the outfield and allowing a run to score.
The Blue Jays will try to avoid a sweep Sunday, with Trey Yesavage starting against Emerson Hancock.
