The National Hockey League has announced the three finalists for the James Norris Memorial Trophy, awarded annually to the league's top defenceman. Buffalo Sabres' Rasmus Dahlin, Colorado Avalanche's Cale Makar, and Columbus Blue Jackets' Zach Werenski are the candidates for the 2025-26 season.
Rasmus Dahlin's Breakout Season
Dahlin, the first overall pick in the 2018 NHL Draft, has had a career year with the Sabres. The Swedish blueliner recorded 20 goals and 55 assists for 75 points in 82 games, leading all Sabres defencemen in scoring. His offensive production and improved defensive play have made him a cornerstone of Buffalo's resurgence.
Cale Makar's Continued Dominance
Makar, the 2022 Norris Trophy winner, remains one of the most dynamic defencemen in the league. The 27-year-old posted 18 goals and 52 assists for 70 points in 78 games, while averaging over 24 minutes of ice time per night. His ability to drive play and contribute at both ends of the ice has been crucial for the Avalanche.
Zach Werenski's All-Around Excellence
Werenski has been a workhorse for the Blue Jackets, leading all NHL defencemen in average ice time at 25:42 per game. The 28-year-old American tallied 16 goals and 48 assists for 64 points, while also excelling in shot blocking and penalty killing. His leadership and consistency have been vital for Columbus.
The winner will be announced during the NHL Awards ceremony later this month. This marks the first time since 2019 that the Norris Trophy finalists do not include Victor Hedman or Roman Josi, signaling a changing of the guard among the league's elite blueliners.
