FIFA has released a new batch of tickets for the 2026 World Cup, which begins in just over a month, as President Gianni Infantino defends the high prices against criticism, including from U.S. President Donald Trump.
New Ticket Release
On Wednesday, FIFA announced on social media that a limited release of tickets would go on sale Thursday at 12 p.m. ET. The organization stated that tickets would be available on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies last, with all sales final.
Infantino Defends Pricing
Speaking at the Milken Institute Global Conference on Tuesday, Infantino argued that FIFA's prices are reasonable compared to other top-tier events in the U.S. He noted that 25% of group stage tickets are available for less than $300 US, claiming that one cannot attend a college game or top-tier professional event for that price. Infantino emphasized that the World Cup must apply market rates in the U.S. entertainment market and that selling tickets too low would lead to resale at higher prices.
Trump Weighs In
President Donald Trump, who has a close relationship with Infantino, told the New York Post he would not pay the $1,565 cheapest seat for Team USA's opening game against Paraguay. Despite his wealth, Trump stated he would like to attend but would not pay that price.
Toronto Games Available
As of Thursday, tickets remain on sale for Canada's opener against Bosnia and Herzegovina on June 12 at BMO Field. Front Category 1 seats are priced at $4,750, while front-row seats for Ghana vs. Panama cost $1,575. The cheapest available tickets for Senegal vs. Iraq are Category 2 upper deck seats at $530.
Front Category 1 Controversy
Last month, FIFA created a new Front Category 1 for premium front-row seats, previously part of Category 1, with prices at least double the original cost. This category was not advertised until after tickets were assigned to seats, leading to fan complaints about being misled. Henry Bushnell of The Athletic reported that many fans felt scammed after paying top dollar for seats in less desirable areas.
FIFA's dynamic pricing plan initially sold unassigned seats in categories, but the assignment process left many disappointed. The new Front Category 1 is now available for at least 20 games, along with Front Category 2 for some sections.
