Castillo's field goal lifts Blue Bombers past Tiger-Cats 14-13

Sergio Castillo kicked a 23-yard field goal with just seconds left on the clock, lifting the Winnipeg Blue Bombers to a dramatic 14-13 victory over the Hamilton Tiger-Cats on Sunday night at Tim Hortons Field.

Game-deciding drive

The Blue Bombers marched down the field in the final minutes, setting up Castillo for the game-winning kick. The drive was highlighted by a crucial pass from quarterback Zach Collaros to receiver Nic Demski, moving the ball into field goal range. Castillo, who had missed a 46-yard attempt earlier in the quarter, made no mistake from close range.

Hamilton had taken a 13-11 lead midway through the fourth quarter on a touchdown pass from quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell to Kenny Lawler, who made a leaping catch in the end zone despite tight coverage from defensive back Jonathan Moxey. The extra point gave the Tiger-Cats a two-point advantage.

Defensive battle

Both defenses dominated for much of the game. Winnipeg's defense held Hamilton to just one touchdown and two field goals, while the Tiger-Cats' defense intercepted Collaros once and forced two sacks. The Blue Bombers managed only one touchdown of their own, a short run by running back Brady Oliveira in the second quarter.

"It was a grind out there," said Blue Bombers head coach Mike O'Shea after the game. "Our guys showed a lot of resilience, especially the defense, keeping us in it when the offense was struggling."

Key statistics

Castillo's game-winner was his second field goal of the night, making him 2-for-3 on the evening. Oliveira rushed for 78 yards on 16 carries, while Collaros completed 22 of 32 passes for 248 yards and one interception. For Hamilton, Mitchell threw for 267 yards and a touchdown but was picked off once.

The victory improved Winnipeg's record to 3-1 on the season, while Hamilton fell to 1-3. The Blue Bombers will look to build on the win when they host the Saskatchewan Roughriders next week.
