Canucks GM Johnson Uncertain on Head Coach Timeline, Malhotra Favored
Canucks GM No Timeline for Head Coach, Malhotra Favored

The Vancouver Canucks still do not have a head coach, and as of Friday afternoon, there is no timeline for when that might change. General Manager Ryan Johnson, when asked about a timeline for announcing the team's next bench boss, simply replied: 'Not right now.'

Malhotra Remains the Presumed Favorite

Manny Malhotra continues to be the presumed heir apparent to Adam Foote, who would become the fifth head coach in five years for the Canucks. Malhotra has spent the past two seasons as head coach of the Abbotsford Canucks, working directly under Johnson. He led the minor-league team to a Calder Cup title last year and is widely regarded as one of the top coaching prospects in hockey.

Malhotra's coaching career spans a decade. He joined the Canucks as a development coach in 2016 after retiring as a player, then served as an assistant coach under Travis Green from 2017 to 2020. He later joined the Toronto Maple Leafs as an assistant under Sheldon Foote before returning to the West Coast in 2024.

Deep Roots in Vancouver

Although Malhotra grew up in Toronto, he has strong ties to British Columbia. His wife, Joann, is from B.C. and is the sister of athletes Steve and Martin Nash. The family initially signed with the Canucks to explore life in B.C. Their son, Caleb, is a top prospect in this summer's NHL draft and is believed to be of great interest to the Canucks, who hold the third overall pick.

Possible Reasons for Delay

Several factors could be delaying the announcement of Malhotra as head coach. The Canucks will need to hire an entirely new coaching staff, which could take time. Salary negotiations may also be ongoing, as Malhotra likely seeks a competitive contract. Additionally, management may be weighing the challenges of a father-son dynamic if they hire Manny as coach and draft Caleb as a player. It is widely acknowledged that such a situation would present significant challenges, no matter how prepared the team and the Malhotras might be.

As the weekend begins, the hockey world continues to wonder whether Malhotra will be named the next head coach or if another candidate will emerge.
