Yasiel Puig Sentencing Delay as Lawyer Files Acquittal Motion
Yasiel Puig Sentencing Delayed Over Acquittal Motion

Former MLB all-star Yasiel Puig will remain with the Toronto Maple Leafs for now, as his sentencing on an obstruction of justice conviction has been delayed. The 35-year-old slugger, now playing for Toronto in the Canadian Baseball League, was originally scheduled to be sentenced on Tuesday. However, federal Judge Dolly M. Gee has pushed the date to June 30 to review a motion for acquittal filed by Puig's legal team.

Background of the Case

Puig was convicted earlier this year for knowingly lying to federal investigators during a 2022 interview. The interview was part of a U.S. government investigation into an illegal bookmaking operation. At the time, Puig was interviewed only as a witness and was not a person of interest. Despite this, he was found guilty of obstruction of justice.

Arguments from the Defense

According to reports from The Athletic, Puig's lawyers argued in the acquittal motion that the prosecution's evidence was insufficient for any reasonable juror to convict the athlete. They further contended that because the interview was not recorded and no transcript exists, there is not enough evidence to support a conviction.

Prosecution's Response

Prosecutors countered that the acquittal motion merely rehashes arguments made at trial, which the jury rejected. They also noted that the judge had previously denied an acquittal motion before the jury's conviction. A sentencing memorandum filed in a California court reveals that U.S. authorities are seeking an 18-month prison sentence, three years of probation, and a US$55,000 fine. The maximum possible sentence is up to 15 years in prison.

The memo states that the recommended sentence is sufficient because it reflects the nature and severity of Puig's crimes and his lack of remorse. It also aims to punish the defendant and deter others from committing similar offenses. Prosecutors added that Puig's history and characteristics influenced their recommendation.

Puig's Performance with the Maple Leafs

Since his debut with the Maple Leafs, where he hit two home runs, Puig has not connected again for the team. His two homers are his only hits through three games, with a batting line of 2-for-8, four walks, and three runs scored. The Blue Jays had two games scheduled over the weekend, but both were postponed due to rain.

Team's Stance on Legal Issues

Maple Leafs CEO Keith Stein stated that the team conducted extensive research before signing Puig and believes the legal issues have been dealt with. We carried out extensive diligence, Stein said. We have had discussions with lots of different people. The issues have been dealt with by the justice system and other qualified parties.

Stein emphasized that the team is focused on fielding the best talent that will represent the Toronto Maple Leafs in a way they can be proud of. He added that Puig is on the right track in his personal life and deserves a chance to play professional baseball, expecting him to be a great contributor to the team and the community.
