Ottawa Senators captain Brady Tkachuk and president of hockey operations and general manager Steve Staios recently held a pivotal meeting to dissect the team's season and chart a course for off-season changes. The discussion allowed both men to reflect on the past campaign while focusing intently on the adjustments needed to elevate the Senators to the next level.
Timing of the Meeting
The meeting occurred after a brief delay caused by personal and professional commitments. Following the Senators' elimination from the NHL playoffs in a four-game sweep by the Carolina Hurricanes on April 25, Tkachuk immediately flew to New Jersey for the birth of his second child. Staios, meanwhile, traveled to Slovakia for the IIHF U18 world championships. Once both returned, they scheduled the exit meeting for Monday, as Tkachuk revealed on The Wingmen Podcast.
Reflecting on the Season
Tkachuk expressed lingering disappointment over the early playoff exit. "It was a tough end to the year and not how we wanted it to go," he said on the podcast. "I'm still having a tough time wrapping my head around it, and let's be honest, a little rattled about it. That one will be a tough one to get past, but at the end of the day, we'll be a lot better because of it."
Off-Season Priorities
The meeting centered on evaluating the roster and identifying key areas for improvement. Staios has emphasized his commitment to building around Tkachuk, dismissing any trade speculation as "nonsense." The Senators aim to bolster their top-six forward group and address other deficiencies to become more competitive.
Future Outlook
With two years remaining on his contract, Tkachuk has not engaged in discussions about his long-term future, focusing instead on the team's immediate needs. Staios remains steadfast in his vision to enhance the supporting cast, ensuring the Senators can advance deeper into the playoffs next season.
