Ryan Strome is uniquely qualified to evaluate the Calgary Flames' rebuild. Acquired from the Anaheim Ducks at the NHL trade deadline in March, the 32-year-old forward has experienced multiple rebuilds during his decade-plus career. Since arriving in Calgary, Strome has consistently praised how the organization is managing its transition period.
Strome's Enthusiastic Endorsement
Appearing on the Morning Cuppa Hockey podcast, Strome offered a glowing review of his time with the Flames. 'I was super pumped to be there, I felt 10 years younger walking into the dressing room there, just rejuvenated and excited,' Strome said. 'The team played well, too, we played really good. I think the young guys took a big step at the end of the year and there's a lot of good veterans in that room.'
Insights on Rebuild Challenges
Strome emphasized the importance of intangible factors in a successful rebuild. 'When you're going through these rebuilds, it's tough, I've been through it. A lot of the things you need that are intangibles to take that next step once you acquire those young players, like a good culture and good older guys surrounding and helping these young players, a good dressing room, a good vibe and a good staff—they're all in place in Calgary, which is a huge head start on a rebuild and a turnaround.'
His comments align with everything he has said since joining the Flames. With the draft lottery approaching and the team poised to select top prospects, Strome's perspective offers reassurance. 'Now, it's just about acquiring some younger guys for the Flames and kind of getting them into the system and seeing what happens,' he explained. 'I think the optimism comes from seeing what other teams have done around the league. It doesn't take as long as it used to, it seems like. These kids are ready to go right out of college and junior, and we'll see what happens in Calgary.'
The future appears bright with talented prospects and draft picks on the horizon, but managing a rebuild is notoriously difficult. Strome's endorsement suggests the Flames are on the right track, providing a morale boost for fans and the organization alike.
