Sharks Enter the Mix for Nurse
The San Jose Sharks have emerged as an unexpected suitor for Edmonton Oilers defenseman Darnell Nurse, according to NHL insider Frank Seravalli. Speaking on Oilers Now with Bob Stauffer, Seravalli revealed that the Sharks have made a play for Nurse, who is on the trading block. However, there is a significant obstacle: San Jose is on Nurse's no-trade list, and that stance has not changed.
Trade Talks Stalled with Eastern Teams
Seravalli indicated that trade discussions involving Nurse are otherwise at a standstill. The three Eastern Conference teams on Nurse's approved list—Boston, Philadelphia, and Pittsburgh—have other priorities at the moment. Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman reported that all three teams would require Edmonton to take back a contracted player in any deal.
Boston is focused on acquiring a right-shot defenseman, not a left-shot like Nurse. Philadelphia is pursuing free agent John Carlson or a trade for top defenseman Zack Werenski. Pittsburgh has multiple irons in the fire. As Seravalli noted, “When you have all these things going on, what that means is the Oilers are at a bit of a standstill with those three teams.” He added that those teams might circle back later, but for now, progress is slow.
Nurse's Future in Edmonton Uncertain
Seravalli suggested it wouldn't be problematic for Nurse to remain in Edmonton, where he is liked in the locker room. However, he questioned whether Nurse has already mentally moved on. Nurse's no-movement clause expires this summer, giving the Oilers more flexibility to trade him next year without his consent. “When that happens, the Oilers have leverage to be able to send them wherever they want without his blessing. So if I’m Nurse, I realize that this band-aid is about to get ripped off at some point,” Seravalli said.
San Jose's Appeal for Nurse
Despite Nurse's reluctance, Seravalli believes San Jose could be a good fit. The Sharks boast a wealth of young talent, including forwards Macklin Celebrini, Ivar Stenberg, Michael Misa, and Will Smith—all top draft picks in recent years—along with defensemen Sam Dickinson and Keaton Verhoeff, and goaltender Yaroslav Askarov. Playing for such a promising young team could rejuvenate Nurse's career.
Oilers' Options and Cap Considerations
If Nurse is traded, Edmonton would free up $9.25 million in cap space, which could be used to make a move during the season. Given the fierce competition for players this summer, it might make sense for the Oilers to wait until early 2027 to deal Nurse, targeting a team that realizes it is out of the playoff hunt and needs to shed salary. Alternatively, the Oilers may reconsider moving Nurse altogether, given the difficulty of replacing him.
In summary, while the Sharks have entered the bidding, Nurse's no-trade list remains a major hurdle. The Oilers are in a holding pattern with Eastern teams, but the situation could evolve as the offseason progresses.
