Smoke Signals That Major Oilers Trade May Blow Up in Stan Bowman's Face
Oilers Trade of Sam O'Reilly for Ike Howard May Backfire

O'Reilly's Stellar Playoff Performance Raises Questions About Trade

Edmonton Oilers general manager Stan Bowman faces growing scrutiny over last summer's blockbuster trade that sent top prospect Sam O'Reilly to the Tampa Bay Lightning in exchange for Ike Howard. While Howard showed promise in the AHL, O'Reilly's dominant playoff run has sparked debate about whether the Oilers made a costly miscalculation.

O'Reilly, selected by Edmonton in the first round of the 2024 NHL Draft, was traded to Tampa after the Lightning's 2022 first-round pick, Ike Howard, requested a move elsewhere. Howard had a strong 2025-26 AHL season with 24 goals and 50 points in 47 games, earning a reputation as a hard-working defender. However, his NHL stint with the Oilers was limited to just 2 goals and 5 points in 29 games, as he struggled to secure ice time.

O'Reilly's Historic Season

O'Reilly, meanwhile, delivered a historic campaign in Canadian major junior hockey. After being traded from London to Kitchener, he recorded 43 points in 28 regular-season games, then added 28 points in 18 playoff contests. He was named MVP of both the OHL playoffs and the Memorial Cup, becoming just the fourth player in Canadian major junior history to win league MVP, playoff MVP, and Memorial Cup MVP in the same season, joining Corey Perry, Mitch Marner, and Brad Richards.

"I'm very interested to see if Sam O'Reilly makes this team next year," said Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman on his 32 Thoughts podcast. "I don't want to put too much pressure on O'Reilly, but I think eventually, and I don't know when it will be, I think he has a chance to be a real game changer for them."

Bowman's Gamble

The Oilers originally acquired O'Reilly by trading their 2025 first-round pick. At the time, Oilers scouting director Rick Pracey praised O'Reilly's intangibles, size, drive, and defensive diligence. "We valued Sam extremely high and we thought there was a probability he'd be late first round," Pracey said. "It was time to make a move. It was aggressive, yet we think Sam's worth it."

However, Bowman's decision to trade O'Reilly for Howard now appears risky. Howard's NHL production has been minimal, and the Oilers' signing of Jack Roslovic further diminished his opportunities. Meanwhile, reports suggest Edmonton may pursue another top-six winger, potentially blocking Howard's path to a regular role.

Lightning's Optimism

Tampa Bay general manager Julien BriseBois expressed confidence in O'Reilly, noting his pro-style game and readiness to contribute at the NHL level. "He's coming off as successful a season as any player in Canadian junior hockey," wrote Eduardo A. Encina of the Tampa Bay Times. O'Reilly is now expected to push for an NHL job in Tampa, while the Oilers face questions about whether they gave up a future star for a player who has yet to make an impact.
