Bo Levi Mitchell threw three touchdown passes as the Hamilton Tiger-Cats defeated the Winnipeg Blue Bombers 37-27 on Friday night, spoiling Winnipeg's home opener and earning their first win of the season.
Mitchell completed 22 of 31 passes for 298 yards and three touchdowns, with one interception. He connected with Tim White, Kiondre Smith, and Shemar Bridges for scores.
"I'm proud of the guys for executing in the weather," Mitchell said after the game, referencing the rainy conditions at Princess Auto Stadium.
The Tiger-Cats (1-2) jumped out to a 17-0 lead in the first quarter and never looked back. Running back James Butler added 89 rushing yards and a touchdown on 18 carries.
For the Blue Bombers (1-2), quarterback Zach Collaros threw for 312 yards and two touchdowns, but also had two interceptions. Running back Brady Oliveira rushed for 78 yards and a touchdown.
Winnipeg cut the lead to 27-24 early in the fourth quarter, but Hamilton responded with a touchdown drive to regain control. The Tiger-Cats defense came up with key stops in the final minutes to seal the victory.
"We knew they would make a run, but our guys stayed focused and made the plays when we needed them," said Tiger-Cats head coach Scott Milanovich.
Hamilton's next game is at home against the Toronto Argonauts on June 20, while Winnipeg travels to face the Calgary Stampeders.
