Kucherov edges McDavid to win Hart Trophy as NHL MVP
Kucherov beats McDavid for Hart Trophy

Tampa Bay Lightning right wing Nikita Kucherov has been awarded the Hart Trophy as the NHL's most valuable player, narrowly beating out Edmonton Oilers superstar Connor McDavid in the closest voting in years.

A Tight Race for the League's Top Honor

The announcement, made Wednesday by the NHL, confirmed that Kucherov received 1,520 points in the voting, while McDavid finished with 1,498 points. The 22-point margin is the smallest since the award's inception. Kucherov led the Lightning to a first-place finish in the Atlantic Division, recording 128 points (44 goals, 84 assists) in 82 games. McDavid, who won the Art Ross Trophy as the league's leading scorer with 130 points, was widely considered the favorite, but Kucherov's two-way play and leadership swayed voters.

Historic Achievement for Kucherov

This marks the first Hart Trophy for the 32-year-old Russian winger, who also won the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP in 2020 and 2021. He becomes the third Lightning player to win the Hart, joining Martin St. Louis (2004) and Steven Stamkos (2012). Kucherov's victory also ends McDavid's two-year reign as Hart winner.

The vote was conducted by the Professional Hockey Writers' Association, with 100 members casting ballots. Kucherov received 55 first-place votes to McDavid's 45. In third place was Colorado Avalanche defenseman Cale Makar, followed by Boston Bruins forward David Pastrnak and New York Rangers goaltender Igor Shesterkin.

Kucherov will be formally presented with the Hart Trophy at the NHL Awards ceremony in Las Vegas on June 26.
