Chayka's Vision for the Team
Chayka stressed the need for an organizational vision that transcends individual coaching styles. 'Regardless of who the coach is, we should have an organizational vision on how we play and the things we value,' he said. The search will not be rushed, with key milestones such as the draft in late June providing a natural timeline. Chayka noted that the quality of candidates will dictate the pace of interviews and final selection.
Potential Candidates
Among the early names mentioned is Bruce Cassidy, a high-profile, Stanley Cup-winning coach currently available. However, other opportunities may arise as the playoffs conclude and contracts expire. Manny Malhotra, a former Leafs assistant now with Vancouver's AHL affiliate, is another candidate. Chayka indicated that all coaching backgrounds would be considered, including up-and-comers, those skilled with young players, and experienced NHL veterans.
The Decision to Part Ways with Berube
The firing of Berube followed a face-to-face meeting last week where Chayka sought explanations for the team's 30-point drop and other shortcomings. After discussions with Sundin and others in the hockey office, the decision was finalized by Tuesday. Berube, 60, will receive an estimated $6 million US over the next two years as compensation for his dismissal.
Chayka acknowledged Berube's passion, saying, 'Craig's heart is in it. He felt he had some unfinished business and has a lot of great connections to the players here.' Despite the cost, the organization views the investment as worthwhile if the new coach can lead the team to playoff success.
