Blue Jays fans upset over MLB all-star jerseys with American theme

Toronto Blue Jays fans are expressing frustration after Major League Baseball announced that players will wear Stars and Stripes-themed jerseys during the 2026 All-Star Game festivities, including the Home Run Derby and other events. The jerseys feature a USA 250 patch on the sleeve, commemorating the United States' semiquincentennial, despite the Blue Jays being the only MLB franchise based outside the U.S.

Jersey Design Sparks Backlash

While MLB spared the Blue Jays from wearing the patriotic uniforms on July 4 for U.S. Independence Day, the league will use the same design for the All-Star Game in Philadelphia. The jerseys are described on MLB's official online store as “bursting with stars-and-stripes pride,” which has upset many Canadian fans. One Reddit user commented, “Couldn’t pay me to wear a jersey with the USA 250 patch on it.”

The MLB site's product description for Blue Jays jerseys reads: “Big league star power meets bigger history. This Nike Stadium Jersey brings All-Star spectacle to the birthplace of American independence. Your favourite Toronto Blue Jays standout is showcased on a design bursting with stars-and-stripes pride, a nod to the nation’s semiquincentennial.” It adds that “USA 250 and 2026 All-Star Game patches sit on opposite sleeves, marking both the country’s milestone and the Midsummer Classic in Philadelphia.”

Jerseys Available for Purchase with Price Shock

Jerseys of players like Ernie Clement and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. are available on MLB.com. Guerrero Jr., who opted out of participating this year after being voted in by fans, has his jersey listed as a “Special Event Item” for $318.99 — $94 more than the $224.99 price of other Blue Jays jerseys. Dylan Cease and Louis Varland versions are only available through the “Pick-A-Player” customization feature.

“The sight of seeing one of Vladdy’s Blue Jays jerseys featuring the Stars and Stripes may stun some fans, and its price also will provide a shock for many,” the article notes.

All-Star Hats Also Criticized

Fans also reacted negatively to the newly unveiled workout hats for the All-Star Game. The hats feature a “fuzzy” logo, which MLB describes as “premium chenille embroidery.” One user commented, “The logo looks terrible like that.” Another asked, “Is it supposed to look moldy?” A third wrote, “It’s so fuzzy. I want my logo to be crisp!”

The Blue Jays wore their standard grey away jerseys against the Seattle Mariners on July 4, paired with a red Canada Day hat. The team's unique position as the only non-U.S. franchise has made the patriotic theme a recurring point of contention among fans.
