Man fled house arrest, tried to rob sex worker in Markham

Yousif Babiker, 25, is facing robbery charges after allegedly fleeing house arrest and attempting to rob a sex worker in Markham, York Regional Police announced.

Details of the incident

Police responded to a report of a robbery in progress on July 2, 2026, in the area of Highway 7 and McCowan Road. Investigators allege that Babiker, who was under house arrest for unrelated charges, left his residence without authorization and approached a sex worker. He then attempted to rob her at knifepoint, according to police.

The victim was not injured during the incident. Babiker was arrested a short distance away and is now facing one count of robbery with a weapon and one count of breach of a recognizance order.

Court proceedings

Babiker appeared in a Newmarket court on July 3 and was remanded into custody. He is scheduled to appear again on July 10. The charges have not been proven in court.
