Letters to the Editor: Canada's Economy, Natural Resources, and Democracy
Letters: Canada's Economy, Resources, and Democracy

A stagnant and underperforming economy starved for investment, coupled with a disabling cost of living crisis, pretty much means we better get something promising going soon. Entering this picture is Canada's unrivalled wealth of its national resources. Why then has this wealth not been transformed to benefit our economy? Some might say it's in our nature to be respectful of any group or community affected by bringing those resources to market. So far, in initiating projects that are in the national interests, we seem to find ourselves flailing about in the spectrum that ranges from consultation to eminent domain or expropriation. How things progress with major projects will determine our position on this spectrum and its impact on success.

Believing in Democracy

One wonders if and when Cuba has a democratic government if the Mark Carney government will protest its conception if and when the U.S. has anything to do with this event. After 60 years of one-sided government, Canadians have travelled to Cuba and have helped that economy keep the current government in power. If one peep out of the federal Liberal government of Canada occurs, then we all know how aligned Canada is to democracy. Right now, Canadians need help from a government bent on control.

(Expect little to no improvement now that Carney has a majority)

A Country in Trouble

Re 'A little turbulence' for PM (Bryan Passifiume, May 13): So, 58% think Carney is doing a great job? Is that the laid-off auto workers, the teens who can't get jobs, the record number of people defaulting on loans and mortgages, or the unions and corporate welfare recipients who don't want their bloated budget cash cow to go away? This country is in severe trouble while that smirking failure enriches all of his buddies, with U.S. dollars.
