A worker was taken to hospital after a van struck a daycare facility west of Edmonton on Thursday afternoon. The incident occurred at Young Champions Daycare on 48 Street in Stony Plain around 1:30 p.m. on June 4, 2026.
Emergency crews responded to the scene, where a van had crashed into the building. The worker, who was inside the daycare at the time, sustained injuries and was transported to hospital. The extent of their injuries has not been disclosed.
According to witnesses, the van appeared to have lost control before hitting the daycare. No children were reported injured in the incident. The driver of the van remained at the scene and is cooperating with authorities.
Investigation Underway
Stony Plain Royal Canadian Mounted Police are investigating the cause of the crash. Officials have not confirmed whether charges will be filed. The area around the daycare was cordoned off for several hours as investigators gathered evidence.
Young Champions Daycare has been temporarily closed while the building is assessed for structural damage. Parents were notified and asked to pick up their children from a nearby location.
Community Response
Local residents expressed shock and concern over the incident. “It’s terrifying to think what could have happened,” said a neighbor who wished to remain anonymous. “We’re just glad no children were hurt.”
The daycare has been a staple in the community for over a decade, providing care for dozens of families. The owner stated that they are cooperating fully with the investigation and will prioritize the safety of children and staff moving forward.
This incident follows a series of vehicle-related accidents involving buildings in the region. Authorities remind drivers to exercise caution, especially in residential and commercial areas.
