MLA Scott Sinclair Reinstated to UCP Caucus

Alberta MLA Scott Sinclair has been reinstated into the United Conservative Party (UCP) caucus, exactly one year after his expulsion. The announcement was made by Premier Danielle Smith on Wednesday, confirming that Sinclair would once again sit as a UCP member.

Sinclair was expelled from the caucus in May 2025 after he and fellow MLA Peter Guthrie announced plans to relaunch the Progressive Conservative Party of Alberta. At the time, the move was seen as a direct challenge to Premier Smith's leadership and the unity of the UCP. Guthrie, who also participated in the PC revival effort, remains outside the caucus and has not been reinstated.

In a statement, Sinclair expressed gratitude for the opportunity to return, saying he looks forward to continuing to serve his constituents and work collaboratively with the government. He acknowledged that his actions had created division but emphasized his commitment to the party's core principles.

The reinstatement comes amid ongoing internal tensions within the UCP, as the party prepares for the next provincial election. Political analysts suggest that Sinclair's return could help shore up support in rural ridings where the PC brand still holds sway.

Premier Smith defended the decision, stating that Sinclair had demonstrated a renewed commitment to the party and its goals. She noted that the UCP remains focused on delivering results for Albertans, and that bringing Sinclair back into the fold strengthens the team.

The opposition NDP criticized the move, calling it a sign of instability within the UCP. NDP Leader Rachel Notley accused the government of prioritizing internal party politics over the needs of Albertans.

Sinclair's reinstatement is effective immediately, and he will resume his duties as the MLA for Lac Ste. Anne-Parkland.
