A 34-year-old man from Sault Ste. Marie has been charged in connection with two separate robberies that involved a hammer attack and forcible confinement, according to local police. The incidents, which occurred earlier this month, have raised concerns about public safety in the area.
Details of the Incidents
Police allege that the suspect entered a local business on May 15, brandished a hammer, and assaulted an employee before stealing cash. The victim sustained minor injuries but did not require hospitalization. In a second incident on May 17, the suspect allegedly forced a victim into a room at a residence, demanding money and threatening further violence. The victim managed to escape unharmed and contacted authorities.
Charges Filed
The accused faces multiple charges, including robbery with a weapon, assault with a weapon, forcible confinement, and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose. He was arrested on May 19 and appeared in bail court on May 20, where he was remanded into custody pending a further appearance.
Police have not released the name of the accused to protect the integrity of the ongoing investigation. They are urging anyone with additional information to come forward.
Community Response
Local residents have expressed shock at the brazen nature of the crimes. Sault Ste. Marie Mayor Matthew Shoemaker said in a statement, "We are grateful for the swift action of our police service. These incidents are not representative of our community, and we stand with the victims."
The investigation is ongoing, and police are exploring whether the suspect may be linked to other similar incidents in the region.
