The Saskatchewan NDP is urging the province's rate review panel to scrap its current SaskPower rate increase review and start over, citing concerns over transparency and political interference. The controversy centers on a proposed $26 billion coal plant refurbishment that the NDP argues has not been properly scrutinized.
NDP Calls for Transparency
Opposition critic for SaskPower, Aleana Young, stated that the review process has been compromised by government interference. She emphasized that ratepayers deserve a fair and independent assessment of the utility's financial needs, especially given the massive cost of the coal refurbishment project.
Concerns Over Political Interference
The NDP alleges that the Saskatchewan Party government has pressured the rate review panel to approve the rate increase without adequate public consultation or evidence. They argue that the $26 billion refurbishment plan lacks a clear business case and could lead to significant rate hikes for consumers.
Young called for a new review that would fully examine alternative energy sources and the long-term financial implications of the coal plant upgrades. She also demanded that the panel be allowed to operate independently, free from political influence.
The government has defended its approach, stating that the refurbishment is necessary to ensure reliable power generation and that the rate review process is robust. However, the NDP remains unconvinced and plans to continue pushing for a revised review.
