Progressive Conservative MLA Jeff Wharton announced his retirement from Manitoba politics on Wednesday, ending a decade-long tenure representing the Red River North constituency. Wharton, first elected in 2016, made the announcement during a news conference at the Manitoba legislature.
Wharton's Political Career
Wharton served as Minister of Municipal Relations and later as Minister of Economic Development and Jobs under former Premier Heather Stefanson. He also held roles as government house leader and deputy speaker. In his retirement statement, Wharton expressed gratitude to constituents and colleagues, noting his pride in advancing rural infrastructure and economic development projects.
Reaction from Party Leaders
Interim Progressive Conservative leader Wayne Ewasko praised Wharton's dedication, calling him "a tireless advocate for his community." Premier Wab Kinew thanked Wharton for his public service, acknowledging his contributions to Manitoba's growth.
Wharton's retirement triggers a byelection in Red River North, a predominantly rural riding that has been a Tory stronghold. The exact date for the byelection has not yet been set.
